Job Description

The Media and Communications Specialist will be responsible for all activities required to develop and execute segmented communication strategies to drive program effectiveness, educate and inform program stakeholders, enhance media relations, and build brand recognition for the Humane World for Animals South Africa office, its priority initiative programs and campaigns. It requires creative thinking, strategic planning, and strong interpersonal skills to craft compelling narratives for stakeholders across multiple channels, motivating them to act in favour of the organization and its goals. A key outcome is to position Humane World for Animals South Africa as a leading authority on animal welfare across the African continent.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Identification of key elements of the Humane World for Animals brand, programs and campaigns.
  • Development of a long-term integrated communications strategy that supports (i) program outcomes, (ii) stakeholder communication, (iii) media outreach (iv) brand development initiatives
  • Development of tailored communication strategies for each campaign and program area, aligned with its stakeholders and campaign goals.
  • Active implementation and evaluation of the communication, brand and media strategies.
  • Management of designers, printing vendors, catering vendors, and administrative vendors.
  • Preparation and presentation of the annual budget for communication, brand and media work.
  • Monitoring key output metrics and expenditure against agreed targets; and
  • Reporting as required.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Undergraduate academic degree and/or diploma in a relevant communication / media / marketing field.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in the South African and/or communications environment, with a specific interest in animal protection work.
  • At least three years’ experience in media in the NGO sector, with a specific focus on working with marginalized communities
  • Commitment to organisational objectives and mainstream operating style and the ability to professionally advocate policy positions with a sincere interest in animal protection.
  • Knowledge of South Africa’s media environment insofar as it relates to reporting on animal protection issues
  • Personal knowledge and relationships with a material number of local journalists and media entities
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to craft clear and compelling messages for diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent event management skills including planning, execution and management.
  • Ability to quickly absorb and communicate complex subject matter to a variety of audiences.
  • Outgoing and personable manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • Experience in crisis communication management.
  • Experience in the management of junior and new staff, vendors and other stakeholders.
  • Computer proficiency and writing, spreadsheets and presentations.
  • Familiarity with communication tools and social media technologies.
  • Must be based in Cape Town with the ability to work in a hybrid environment, either at home or in an office as required.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, as needed.
