Marsh Memorial Homes nurtures children and transforms lives, by providing short term care for children who have experienced abuse, neglect or abandonment. Our programmes strive to rehabilitate and reunite children with their families or communities. Marsh Memorial Homes is a child and youth care centre. Our facility provides residential care for up to sixty children outside their family's environment in accordance with a residential care programme suited to the children's needs.

Job Description

Primary purpose of the position

To ensure excellence in the holistic development of children placed in the care of the Homes so as to promote their welfare, by:

  1. Ensuring that the daily life programme, developmental and recreational programmes offered by the Home meet the needs of children, are developmental phase appropriate and exceed the minimum norms and standards
  2. Developing a Childcare team where employees are motivated, supported /supervised and constantly trained and equipped to offer the highest possible standard of childcare
  3. Recruiting, training and managing volunteers to assist in the running of relevant, beneficial and stimulating developmental phase appropriate programmes.

Qualifications and Requirements

Minimum qualification required for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Child & Youth Care.
  • Current SACSSP (South African Council for Social Service Professions) Registration at professional level
  • Valid Unendorsed B or EB (code 8) driver’s licence with PDP 

Minimum experience required for this position:

  • At least 5 years post-qualification experience (experience working within a residential child/youth care facility would be advantages)
  • Minimum of 3 years’ management experience (in supervising Child care workers preferable)
  • Experience in staff development /training

Competencies required achieving the core KPA’s:

  • Behavioural attributes:
    • High-energy individual with a drive for detail, reliable, and able to work independently in the field and motivate a team
    • Proactive problem solver
    • Proven ability to build a team
    • Planning and Organising                             
    • Personal circumstance must allow the employee to be on call and assist with matters after normal working hours and on weekends

  • Technical skills
    • Computer Literacy – MS Office Suite (MS Outlook, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel)
    • Strong verbal and written skills in English
    • Report writing including statistical reporting

  • Knowledge
    • Children’s Act
