Debriefing and Counselling Sessions
Trauma is the lasting emotional response that often results from living through a distressing event. Experiencing a traumatic event can harm a person's sense of safety, sense of self, and ability to regulate emotions and navigate relationships.
Often the work of those in the non-profit sector is supporting people in a time of need and can include helping communities rebuild themselves after a natural disaster, helping a family through tough economic times or helping individuals overcome challenging circumstances like addiction, unemployment, damaging relationships and such. Because of the nature of the work non-profits do, staff members and volunteers are often exposed to trauma daily and often experience secondary trauma.
Trauma debriefings (either one-on-one or in group settings) provide a safe, open, and non-judgmental space and enable participants to share their initial reactions and emotions following a critical incident. Trained Trauma Counsellors conduct these sessions on behalf of NPOwer to anyone from the non-profit community.
Debriefing sessions are confidential, case-managed, and guided with empathy and support.

Support Group and Coffee Connect
NPOwer Support Group Meetings
Being part of the non-profit sector can at times feel isolating, demanding and overwhelming. The NPOwer Support Group meetings offer a safe space to share and voice experiences, feelings, and discuss some of the challenges that NPOs encounter on a daily basis. Since it was launched in late 2021, attendance at the monthly meetings has grown each month with new and old members joining from a wide variety of organisations across the country. The NPOwer Support Group is a source of empathetic understanding and a nonjudgmental environment where members have a voice and learn to take control of their situations. The Support Group meets on the second Friday of each month and provides a safe space to discuss, reflect, and lean on one another for support. In order to create more awareness of the Support Group, as well as to promote and increase attendance, a mini newsletter is sent out to the NPOwer mailing list highlighting the theme for that month’s Support Group meeting. In addition, we send out recurring SMSs leading up to the event reminding attendees to register and join the meeting. -
